Doa Aly
May 2014
Cairo, Egypt
In May, Egyptian artist Doa Aly opened her Cairo studio to the crews of Medrar.TV and Vernissage TV for a day. Aly shared with us her artistic processes and how her interests have developed since her first painting show in 2002 to her more recent drawings and performance videos.
Much of Aly`s work is inspired by her interest in aberrations of the human form, archaic literature, and classical dance. She often uses an interdisciplinary approach to explore lust as a fundamental condition of humanity, taking inspiration from short stories, epics, myths, folktales, and medical manuals that speak of an intense struggle between control and consummation. Aly is interested in subtly highlighting moments of possible physical and psychological transformation through her various projects.
Doa Aly was born in Cairo, Egypt in 1976. She currently lives and works in Cairo. He selected group exhibitions include Meeting Points 6, Beirut and Argos (2011); The Future of Tradition/The Tradition of Future, Haus Der Kunst, Munich; 7th Busan Biennale (2010); 11th Istanbul Biennial (2009); 3rd Guangzhou Triennial, China; and PhotoCairo4: The Long Shortcut, Cairo (2008).
This video was produced as part of the arts documentation workshop organized by Medrar.TV in collaboration with Vernissage TV. The workshop was made possible with the support of the Swiss Arts Council, Pro Helvetia.
